Harry Kane's Ballon d’Or: Why experience beat youth in football's biggest individual race
Harry Kane, Ballon d’Or 2026: Harry Kane wins the 2026 Ballon d’Or ahead of Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal, highlighting experience, consistency and sustained excellence.
While football loves to celebrate its rising stars, and watching a teenager go toe-to-toe with defenders and create magical moments can make them the future, the 2026 Ballon d’Or shows that sometimes age doesn’t benefit success.
On the 26th October 2026, Harry Kane won the Men’s Ballon d’Or. Overcoming rivals Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal (19), the 33-year-old became the most decorated individual thanks to his consistent goal-scoring throughout his career.
Why did Harry Kane win the Ballon d’Or?
Kane had an impressive season in 2025/26, scoring an incredible 73 goals in 65 games for Bayern Munich and England. Kane scored 61 goals in 51 games for Bayern Munich to help them win the Bundesliga and complete a domestic treble. He bagged 6 goals at the World Cup in 2026 as England reached the Semi-Finals.
Kane was incredible in the Bundesliga by scoring 36 goals, winning the Golden Boot for the third year in a row. He also chipped in with 14 goals in the Champions League, finishing just behind Mbappé who scored 15.
This shows Kane had an outstanding season, having won titles domestically and scored incredibly well individually. His performance meant voters had a lot of evidence to back up his case.
Kane won the Ballon d’Or after being voted by International Football Journalists. He had an impressive goal-scoring record, helped Bayern win trophies and performed well for England so voters had a strong argument for Kane.
Kane vs Yamal – Experience vs Potential?
However, this year is interesting due to the two players competing.
Yamal is a product of a new wave of footballers who have reached their peak very quickly. He shone in his performances for Barcelona and is now one of the most watched young players in the game. Yamal placed third in Ballon d’Or voting but won the Men’s Young Talent of the Year for the third year in a row.
This is an impressive achievement as it means he had an incredible start to his career. However, the Ballon d’Or takes into account all players from all generations.
This does not mean Yamal had a poor season and doesn’t mean Kane is a better player due to his experience.
Yamal had already shown incredible talent whereas Kane had an incredible season due to his experience. This is an interesting contrast as it showcases two different stages of a footballer’s career. Yamal has made himself one of the best young players in the game. However, Kane had an incredible season which had both incredible personal and team success.
As mentioned earlier this does not mean voters prefer to vote for older players, it means Kane had the best argument due to his overall performance.
Why does Mbappé also matter in this debate?
Mbappé came second in the Ballon d’Or. He is also a well-established international star and had a prolific goal-scoring season. He also topped Yamal in the final standings.
We can see this shows the Ballon d’Or isn’t just a battle between older players and teens. Both Kane and Mbappé had incredible goal-scoring records.
However, we can also see that Yamal was one of the top candidates showing that age doesn’t affect your chances.
Kane’s victory shows that your age doesn’t affect how much you achieved in your season. Consistency, contribution and success are key.
From loan spells to football's biggest individual honour.
Kane has had an incredible journey to become one of the best strikers in Europe. He was sent on loan to Leyton Orient, Millwall, Norwich City and Leicester City. Eventually Kane found his feet at Tottenham Hotspur and became known as one of the best goal scorers in the Premier League.
However, Tottenham didn’t win any major trophies during Kane’s time there. They did reach the 2019 Champions League Final but lost to Liverpool.
When Kane moved to Bayern Munich in 2023 he faced a new challenge. He got the chance to regularly compete for major trophies. However, in the 2024/25 season, Bayern won the Bundesliga and Kane won his first major senior club trophy.
Since then Kane has shown how personal quality can combine with team success. Kane was already an elite striker but the trophies have added to his story.
Kane winning the Ballon d’Or shows he had a great season, combining incredible goal-scoring with team success.
What does this mean for English Football?
Kane has become the first Englishman to win the Men’s Ballon d’Or since Michael Owen in 2001. He joins a short list including Stanley Matthews, Bobby Charlton and Kevin Keegan.
It was also an incredible moment for Kane as the ceremony was held in London. This means the Ballon d’Or has been awarded in England for the first time in its 70-year history.
For English football Kane’s win ends a 25-year wait for another English man to win the Ballon d’Or. It’s also an incredible personal achievement for Kane who has been known for his goal-scoring records and international duties.
However, we shouldn’t take this as the end of the discussion around the next generation. Yamal is still one of the most promising young talents in the game and Mbappé is still competing at the top level.
They will continue to have successful careers. Kane’s achievement was for this season.
Overall football doesn’t have one set timeline for success. Some rise to fame as teenagers, others take their time to prove they are the best by being consistent. This means Yamal still has a long way to go but Kane has added another chapter to his story by winning the most prestigious individual award. In a sport that often gets obsessed with the next big thing, it’s a reminder that potential gets noticed but performances count.
