Europe's mega-fire: Why Spain and France's Wildfires are becoming harder to stop?
Europe's forests are no longer just burning—they are entering the era of the mega-fires. As Spain and France battle increasingly uncontrollable wildfires driven by climate change and decades of flawed forest management, the crisis raises a larger question: could countries like India, already grappling with recurring forest fires and shrinking forest landscapes, be staring at a similar ecological future.
Europe's latest wildfire emergency is no longer being treated as another difficult summer. From southern France to northeastern Spain, firefighters are confronting what experts increasingly describe as mega-fires—fast-moving, high-intensity blazes capable of overwhelming modern firefighting systems despite massive aerial deployments, military support and large-scale evacuations. As thousands flee their homes and tens of thousands of hectares of forest continue to burn, the question has shifted from why Europe burns every summer to why these fires are becoming larger, more destructive and increasingly uncontrollable.
The immediate trigger remains an intense combination of extreme heat, prolonged drought and strong winds. But investigations by climate scientists suggest these conditions are no longer exceptional. According to scientific assessments, human-induced climate change made the hot, dry conditions driving the current fires at least twice as likely in southwestern France and nearly twenty times more likely in central Spain. Rising temperatures are lengthening heatwaves, reducing soil moisture and drying vegetation earlier in the season, effectively extending the window during which forests remain combustible.
Yet climate alone does not explain the scale of the disaster. A striking paradox underpins this year's fire season. Instead of drought alone creating the problem, wet winters followed by exceptionally hot summers have produced ideal conditions for mega-fires. Abundant winter rainfall encouraged vigorous vegetation growth across southern Europe. When successive heatwaves arrived, that vegetation rapidly dried into vast reserves of combustible fuel, allowing fires to spread with unprecedented speed and intensity.
The reports argue that the crisis is equally rooted in decades of changing land use. Across much of Mediterranean Europe, rural depopulation and agricultural abandonment have transformed landscapes that were once actively managed through grazing, cultivation and controlled burning.
Those traditional practices naturally fragmented forests and created firebreaks. Their disappearance has left behind denser, uninterrupted woodland where flames can travel across entire landscapes. In several regions, the expansion of highly flammable species such as pine and eucalyptus has further increased fire intensity.
The result is a new category of wildfire that increasingly defies conventional firefighting. Unlike traditional forest fires confined largely to the forest floor, today's mega-fires spread simultaneously through tree canopies, surface vegetation and airborne embers. In some cases, they generate towering pyrocumulonimbus clouds—fire-driven weather systems capable of producing erratic winds and carrying burning debris over long distances, igniting fresh fires kilometres away. Firefighters have also reported persistent underground hotspots that can reignite long after surface flames appear extinguished.
For experts, the lesson is becoming increasingly clear. Europe's wildfire crisis is no longer simply a seasonal emergency or a consequence of rising temperatures. It reflects the convergence of climate change, accumulated forest fuel, landscape transformation and the growing limits of suppression-based firefighting, signalling a structural shift in how wildfires behave across the continent.
Europe's mega-fires are therefore more than a climate story. They are also a governance story—one that illustrates how rising temperatures, changing landscapes and decades of land-management decisions can converge into a single ecological crisis. That question increasingly resonates beyond the Mediterranean.
India is already witnessing more frequent forest fires across several landscapes, even as debates over forest governance have intensified. Recent discussions around the Forest Rights Act, concerns over forest diversion for mining projects such as the proposed Odisha coal block, and long-running questions over who governs forests—local communities or administrative institutions—reflect a parallel debate over how forests are managed before disasters occur. Rather than suggesting India faces Europe's crisis today, Europe's experience serves as a reminder that forests are shaped as much by governance choices as by climate. Once ecological degradation and institutional failure begin reinforcing one another, firefighting alone rarely remains enough.
